the body at home:
textures of the architecturally everyday
B.Arch. Thesis

the body at home explores domestic space using experimental methodologies including lidar scan, collage, soundscape, and installation to investigate the place in which our most intimate relationships are investigated. the home is secretive, erotic, everyday, liminal. it exists as a nexus of every interaction we have with the outside world, and is, as a result, in a state of constant flux. this work features memories, sensations, and dreams of spatial relationships between body(ies) and the built environment. like rooms in the home have the ability for chimerism, these scenes attempt to bleed into and over and through one another to represent with great care the textures and impressions of the ways we live every day.

Queering Architecture in the American Rust Belt

w/ Jason Garwood

How can we represent Queer spaces in the American Rust Belt? This region is inherently interstitial, and is pervaded by memory, which Richard Scott entrusts as not toxic, but ‘residual.’&nbsp;
This project combines traditional architectural tools (plan, section, perspective) with lidar scanning, video, glitch, collage, and narrative to present a framework that connects the body to a regional
scale through Queer memory. It questions how collective trauma can become
residual power, and celebrates the importance of
human connection before that of architecture.

Redesign of the Pittsburgh Amtrak Station
w/ Shray Tripathi + Mira Teng

This project was an investigation into what it means
to design a space for public transit while grappling
with uncertain futures as our cities continue to change. This intervention positions a new train station at the nexus of
three of Pittsburgh’s most historically significant
neighborhoods: the Strip, Hill, and Golden Triangle Districts.

Dorchester, MA Library Reimagination
Burt Hill Scholarship Recipient

This intervention is situated in Boston’s Upham’s Corner neighborhood, a vibrant, culturally diverse community nestled within the larger community of Dorchester. The neighborhood demographics inform programmatic inclusions of resources for the homeless population, education programs for the community, and an emphasis on affordable and emergency public housing. Structural CLT panels and zinc cladding work together with glazing at the ground level to fold in the community at all levels.&nbsp;
This project was the recipient of the 2022 Ralph H. Burt Jr. and Alva L. Hill Scholarship.&nbsp;

	Adaptive Reuse of Det Gronne Parkering&nbsp;

This project was completed as part of my study abroad experience in Copenhagen during the Fall of 2023. This intervention explores what it might mean to use adaptive reuse in Copenhagen’s Nørrebro, a neighborhood with a complicated and important history in relationship to community action and urban renewal.&nbsp;
The site takes a parking garage from the 2000s which replaced social housing, demolished during Copenhagen’s 1980 urban renewal plan, and re-imagines it as a community locale, investigating what it means to design for changing neighborhood landscapes.&nbsp;

Entryway Pavilion for CMU Spring Carnival 2022
In collaboration with CMU NOMAS
This project was a design-build exploration completed by the Carnegie Mellon chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students for the 2022 spring carnival celebration. This project focused on material tectonics and prioritized simplicity in joint details to allow the arraying of two modules repeatedly to form a larger aggregated structure. I was able to participate in the fabrication process as a construction lead, and spent about 70 hours gaining real world design-build experience.

Ethical and Sustainable Worldbuilding with Lidarw/ E. Fleischer and M. Tayao
Morianum is a constructed world designed for tabletop role-playing, worldbuilding, and mapmaking games. This project was a collaboration between an artist (M. Tayao), a linguist (E. Fleischer), and an architect (me) in order to explore how playing games in imaginary worlds can help us think more critically about the one we currently live in.

This ongoing collaboration includes several different pieces, including development of a constructed language unique to the people of the fictional Morianum, design of several playable character archetypes, and the formulation of the eight regions, both through historical and topographical means of exploration.

THE WRITING

For centuries, the discipline of architecture has concerned itself with the body. However, bodily explorations are limited to largely abstract representations. This thesis seeks to center the role of the experiential and the body as it impresses on, and is impressed upon by the built environment. I aim to capture textures and feelings through architectural methodologies in an effort to center the human domestic experience and shake the principles and understandings our discipline takes for granted.

&nbsp; &nbsp; There is so much variation in the ways that each body and the built environment react to one another–this collective uniqueness is, after all, what makes us human. In this way, no building is static. Architecture exists at the site of interaction between body and building; one cannot separate a building from the voices that bounce against its walls any more than one can separate a person’s life from how it has been shaped by architecture. It is the notion of a feedback loop that drives this thesis: where the body affects the built environment that in turn affects the body, repeated ad infinitum.

&nbsp; &nbsp; One ingress point to the interrogation of the human body within the built environment is the home. We spend much of our lives at home, brought to an extreme during the COVID-19 pandemic. Home is the place in which our most intimate relationships are investigated, where our mundane daily habits and creative work meet, where we hide our bodies from the outside world. The home itself is a complex organism made up of many parts which bleed into and over one another. Maggie Nelson describes the concept of a home as a combination of parts in The Argonauts: ‘It isn’t a penchant for decoration that differentiates [the way humans make homes]–it’s the compartmentalization of space. The way we cook and shit and work in different areas. We’ve done this forever, apparently.’ (Maggie Nelson, The Argonauts) At first glance, we might agree with Nelson, indeed almost every home across cultures shares the same ingredients: a kitchen, a bedroom, a bathroom, a living room. However, each of these considered and distinct components has the possibility for chimerism. The home is uniquely Queer in the way that we transform the “intended” function of each space: we eat in the bedroom, have sex in the bathroom, fight with family in the kitchen, and give presentations over zoom in the living room.

&nbsp; &nbsp; The home is also a location in which we collect the things we find important: everyday objects which might not intrinsically or societally have value but which are encoded with memories that we read like runes as they surround us. In Hanya Yanagihara’s A Little Life, these objects are described in relation to a lover recently lost:
‘Willem’s sweatpants, still slung over the edge of the laundry hamper; Willem’s toothbrush, still waiting in the glass on the bathroom sink; Willem’s watch, its face splintered from the accident, still sitting untouched on his nightstand–had become totemic.’ (Hanya Yanagihara, A Little Life) The reciprocity of interaction between space and body folds time back upon itself and calls back to memories embedded in physical artifacts and architectural materials. Our homes are haunted by the ghosts of our past, made physical and corporeal through the stuff we keep around. We choose these objects to surround us because it feels right, a phrase which Lorde describes as acknowledging:
‘The strength of the erotic into a true knowledge, for what that means is the first and most powerful guiding light toward any understanding.’ (Audre Lorde, Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power)

&nbsp; &nbsp; In order to study how architecture and people relate to one another, one must consider the importance of the erotic and intimate. Spatial feedback loops concern not only the way that people and architecture interact with one another, but also how bodies impress upon each other, often within the context of the built environment. ‘It’s so dark, this underspace, dark and sweaty. His thin hair is damp, smells like candy and earth, I burrow my mouth into it and breathe.’ (Maggie Nelson, The Argonauts) We make meaning in this life by forming relationships with the people important to us, but also through interacting with the art and culture that moves us. In the words of Audre Lorde:
‘There is, for me, no difference between writing a good poem and moving into sunlight against the body of a woman I love.’
(Audre Lorde, Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power)Morning light streaming through the windows, the sound of laughter bouncing off kitchen tile, the movement of body(ies) against linen sheets: these are the moments which are encoded in every space we inhabit. The uniting factor between architecture and human connection is the act of feeling something, of being impressed upon.

&nbsp; &nbsp; The home is secretive, erotic, everyday, liminal. It exists as a nexus of every interaction we have with the outside world, and is, as a result, in a state of constant flux. Elizabeth Grosz writes: ‘The space of the in-between is the locus of social, cultural, and natural transformations . . . where becoming, openness to futurity, outstrips the conservational impetus to retain cohesion and unity.’ (Elizabeth Grosz, Architecture from the Outside) It is in this way that the architecturally liminal actually has an incredible power–because it already exists beside the dreary binary: inside vs. outside. Not only this, but the home has the possibility for revolutionary action, occurring when its liminal nature allows radicality to leak to the outside. Maggie Nelson, in discussing A. L. Stein’s photographic installation Puppies and Babies (2012) reminds us of the power that everyday acts have to become revolutionary when considering their context.
‘Some of the subjects… may not identify as Queer, but it doesn’t matter: the installation queers them. By which I mean to say that it partakes in a long history of Queers constructing their own families–be they composed of peers or mentors or lovers or ex-lovers or children or non-human animals–and that it presents Queer family making as an umbrella category under which baby making might be a subset, rather than the other way around. It reminds us that any bodily experience can be made new and strange, that nothing we do in this life need have a lid crammed on it, that no one set of practices or relations has the monopoly on the so-called radical, or the so-called normative.’ (Maggie Nelson, The Argonauts) Like Puppies and Babies, this thesis aims to take something as normative and seemingly boring as the home and place it in a new light. By using analytical methodologies to investigate the body at home, it elucidates a reading of architectural discourse as a whole.

&nbsp; &nbsp; To contextualize my work within historical architectural discourse, I will offer a critique on modernism and functionalism as incomplete representations of the abstract body. Le Corbusier’s Modulor Man from 20th century modernism, Neufert’s Architect’s Data from the teachings of the Bauhaus, and Richard Dreyfuss’s Humanscale Manual from the period of early industrialization come to mind when thinking about the architectural relationship between the built environment and the body. These depictions of the supposedly constant proportions of an “average” body formed the basis for functionalism, prioritizing the organization of space in relationship to the ideal human form.

&nbsp; &nbsp; The “ideal” body as an architectural concept hails from designers known to be affiliated with naziism, classism, white supremacy, and misogyny, to name a few. These bigoted mindsets teach that one type of body is superior to all the rest. Quickly it becomes evident that the failures of Neufert, Le Corbusier, and Dreyfuss’s functionalist applications of the ideal body to architecture lies in their refusal to acknowledge that each human person is unique. The ideal body in this case becomes the abstraction, with the tangible and corporeal of bodily flesh reduced to something which can never be achieved. The neat dimension of 71 millimeters measured from the wrist to the center of the palm completely ignores how it feels when you hold that palm in your own.

&nbsp; &nbsp; With modernist titans often being the standard for “good design,” it is no wonder many architects today ignore just about every body that is not a white, affluent, able-bodied, cisgender, heterosexual man. Indeed, this fatal abstraction bleeds into architecture schools now when first-years forget scale figures in their section drawings, or an entire class’s perspectives end up populated with the same cut-outs from Nonscandinavia pulled quickly the night before final review.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Critiquing false universality in abstract representations of the human body is not new. One interrogation of functionalism as related to the body is the project L’homme, mesures de toutes choses (Man, measure of all things) by Thomas Carpentier, in which different and at times fantastical figures inhabit and influence works of architecture–Jabba the Hutt is hoisted through a home in a zipline-like contraption, Corb’s Modulor Man is edited to include a range of fantastical and diverse bodies including a wheelchair user, Neufert’s female proportion drawing is depicted with a bionic arm.

&nbsp; &nbsp; In lieu of these fantastical depictions, I am more interested in an expansion of the architectural discourse surrounding the body in the way that already occurs in the everyday. There is so much variation in the ways that each body and the built environment impress upon one another–this collective uniqueness is, after all, what makes us human. In this way, no building is static. Architecture exists at the site of interaction between body and building; one cannot separate a building from the voices that bounce against its walls any more than one can separate a person’s life from how it has been shaped by architecture.

&nbsp; &nbsp; It is the notion of a feedback loop that drives this thesis: where the body affects the built environment that in turn affects the body, repeated ad infinitum. But in terms of loops, circuits, and interactions, why is it that the most low-brow, often domestic architectures (a kitchen, a bedroom, a public restroom, a rest stop, a cafe) offer the most room for humanity, while the “well designed” architectural objects fall flat in this regard? Built works from the minds of modernist giants like Le Corbusier and Rem Koolhaas fail to acknowledge it is not the building that necessarily moves us, but the experience of it in the everyday.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Frank O’Hara’s identifies the schism between that which is respected by the academy and that which is meaningful:
‘just as at home I never think of the Nude Descending a Staircase or / at a rehearsal a single drawing of Leonardo or Michelangelo that used to wow me / and what good does all the research of the Impressionists do them / when they never got the right person to stand near the tree when the sun sank.’ (Frank O’Hara, Having a Coke With You) The iconic works of Duchamp, Michelangelo, and Monet are relatively meaningless without context. We are not moved by works of art in a vacuum, but rather because they dredge up memories of our passions. Architecture is the same; the discipline of making space is fundamentally useless if it ignores the ways in which we interact with each other within the context of the built environment. It doesn’t matter how well designed an architectural object is if it lacks capacity to foster the intimate moments that make us human.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Writer and activist Elio Choquette argues for
‘A ‘queering’ of architecture—a resistance to architecture as a tool of oppression and a re-appropriation of space as a tool of transformation. [This] is thus necessary for its transformative potential to be unleashed.’ (Elio Choquette, Queering Architecture: (Un)Making Places) The home as a Queer space has the potential to pose questions of inequality, ethics, and community that our discipline so desperately needs asked. Queerness as a transformative tool goes beyond a discussion of sexuality, pertaining rather to a reimagination of that which is ordinary, mundane, or everyday. This investigation does not define Queerness as simply homosexuality; rather this thesis takes a broader interest in that which is Queer, new, strange, or unusual. Interrogating the ordinary in a new context allows revolutionary possibility to leak in, and allows us to better appreciate the very fabric of our everyday lives as a radical practice of self-expression. This becomes incredibly important in a capitalist landscape which so readily attempts to nullify human connection for the sake of consumerism.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Lorde also expresses that:
‘the erotic functions… in providing the power which comes from sharing deeply any pursuit with another person. The sharing of joy, whether physical, emotional, psychic, or intellectual, forms a bridge between the sharers which can be the basis for understanding much of what is not shared between them, and lessens the threat of their difference.’ (Audre Lorde, Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power) Sharing what makes us as humans feel is therefore paramount in the fight against bigotry and division. The pursuit of feeling stuff in our individual bodies is the thread that knits each of our unique experiences together into the collective tapestry of humanity.

&nbsp; &nbsp; This analysis deliberately features readings from both academic and purely narrative contexts. I feel the reading of low-brow, everyday works of architecture as essential to understanding the built environment necessitates the introduction of different kinds of writing. In the same way that perspectival or filmic representation provides the point of view of the human person within space, narrative writing can elucidate with higher clarity the senses and feelings that are crucial to understanding how people interact with spaces, and how these spaces in turn interact with people. This goes for representational methods, as well.

&nbsp; &nbsp; This thesis places the utmost importance on capturing the feeling of architecture, and therefore incorporates collage, photography, lidar scanning, and non-traditional modeling techniques in addition to more technical and typical drawing styles of plan, section, elevation. This thesis aims to capture the everyday while also demonstrating that it is, by definition, revolutionary, Queer, and sublime. Every moment exists in perpetuity regardless of whether it’s remembered. What has happened has happened; it occupies that moment in time forever. This thesis aims to calibrate the nexus between seduction and analysis, to provide a critical reading of the movement of the body in space while evoking the power of embedded memories.

&nbsp; &nbsp; Methodologies explored in this thesis combine video and soundscape, lidar scanning, photography, and collage to demonstrate the ways in which our bodies impress on the discipline of architecture, the built environment, and each other. Experimenting with strange confrontations of the body in space argues for a decentering of physical architectural spaces in favor of humanity.

&nbsp; &nbsp; A thesis focusing on the body is, by necessity, an architectural thesis. Critical race theory, queerness and gender studies, anti-colonialism and anti-capitalism must have a place in architectural discourse. This is not to say that architectural discourse must provide space for these theories; these theories already live within architectural discourse, whether it chooses to acknowledge them or not. We make architecture fundamentally for people, for the body; we invent places and spaces in which human connections are formed. Our discipline is inherently political, and it is time we started acting like it. Maggie Nelson frames the idea as one of “identitarianism,” stating eloquently:
‘Calling the speaker identitarian then serves as an efficient excuse not to listen to her, in which case the listener can resume his role as speaker. And then we can scamper off to yet another conference with a keynote by Jacques Ranciere, Alain Badiou, Slavoj Žižek, at which we can meditate on the Self and Other, grapple with radical difference, exalt the decisiveness of the Two, and shame the unsophisticated identitarians, all at the feet of yet another great white man pontificating from the podium, just as we’ve done for centuries.’ (Maggie Nelson, The Argonauts)

The discipline and academy of architecture often sideline or dispel conversations of labor, gender, sexuality, and class as “identitarian,” or extraneous to pure explorations of space; I argue that the challenges of the anthropocene necessitate the integration of these questions into every discussion of architecture. By observing spatial forces from these interdisciplinary lenses, architecture has the potential to ask and answer the questions of inequality, ethics, and community omnipresent in our epoch. This thesis centers the body at home in an attempt to capture what it is about architecture that is really important to the way we relate to one another.‘I know we’re still here, who knows for how long, ablaze with our care, its ongoing song.’ (Maggie Nelson, The Argonauts)

The Rust Belt is interstitial. Labor-enforced ménage and traditional morality
grounded in the region’s evangelical Christian past emphasize personal faith,
individualism, and self-sufficiency. Thus, a culture of privacy embedded itself in its
Queer communities. The perpetual flux of industry and fragmented population have
resulted in an abandoned infrastructure that necessitates Queer connection through
the transient: the liminal party, the bedroom, the body, the highway, and so on.

Often, memory is the only artifact in the wake of transience. However, even
memories evolve over time; the pivotal Queer theorist, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick,
establishes memory as toxic for LGBTQ+ individuals. While for many this is true,
Richard Scott, an established Queer creative and poet, counters this definition to
re-appropriate reality as power. Instead of toxic, he entrusts Queer memory as
“residual.” Under this definition, regret becomes obsolete and fleeting moments
become shared experience. Spaces, people, and objects are encoded with memories
that call upon the past–both the traumatic and joyful. Residue in this context carries a tremendous amount of weight.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
It feels right to me.

This sentiment, analyzed by Audre Lorde in her seminal essay “Uses of the Erotic:
the Erotic as Power” represents the importance of seemingly trivial locations. The
altar, the bar, the car, the bathroom, the bedroom–these are all spaces in which
anonymity is freeing but also lonely, and where Queer individuals can forge
connection and personal identity through transience.

While architecture’s great conquest is to capture and shape experience, a Queer
perspective understands space as continually changing. In opposition to the heterostatic tradition, Queer architecture positions human interaction and memory as the
architect.

This project presents an analytical framework that connects the body to a regional
scale through these Queer memories. It questions how collective trauma can become
residual power. Each case study breaks architectural tools in a fallacious attempt to
capture these memories. May these failed experiments celebrate the importance of
human connection and empathy before that of architecture.

This project was an investigation into what it means
to design a space for public transit while grappling
with uncertain futures as our cities continue to change.
Our site for this project is nestled at the nexus of
three of Pittsburgh’s most historically significant
neighborhoods: the Strip District, the cultural city
center; the Hill District, Pittsburgh’s historically Black
neighborhood and the heart of music, dance, and Black
culture in the city; and the Downtown Central Business
District, also called the Golden Triangle. Through time,
the destructive effects of the I-579 highway system and
redlining has produced highly unstable vacant lots in
several areas around our site, prone to short-lived, or
gentrifying land uses, particularly in the Hill District.

The core issue of the current train station which our
design is seeking to address is its inaccessibility and
invisibility. The present Amtrak station exists at
an essential nexus, but is itself a “nowhere place.”
Passengers must unceremoniously descend to a dingy
waiting room below the train platforms. The historic
sequence through the iconic neighboring Daniel
Burnham rotunda and Pennsylvanian apartment
building lobby has not been preserved, and we see this
as a dramatic underutilization of this quintessentially
Pittsburgh building stock.

Our scheme revolves around the impetus to create an
elevated pedestrian ground which stitches together the
fabric of these three neighborhoods. This system of
elevated walkways would forge a walkable connection
beginning with the Burnham rotunda, then progressing
all the way to our proposed revitalization of the historic
funicular (incline) at 16th Street which links the Hill
and Strip Districts as before the construction of the
interstate.
This project features a highly detailed initial portion,
extending from the original Burnham driveway to the
I-579 highway. This portion is what our team detailed
in terms of building systems integration. The remainder
of the project stretches a vast distance of almost 2000’
to the historic 16th Street funicular. This portion is a
highly speculative future phase of project construction,
where the train shed melts into an elevated urban
greenspace for public activity.

Compositionally, the placement and
organization of the elevated pedestrian
ground aligns both with the existing
street grid of the Strip District, and
connects to the speculative future grid of
the Lower Hill district. The walkways in
character aim for an elevated sidewalk
quality, where planting trees becomes
possible, as well as jogging, biking, and
walking. These walkways form a sort of
High Line condition, serving the three
surrounding neighborhoods.
In order to condition the density required
for an elevated pedestrian network
at this scale, we began to investigate
a compositional urban framework
with larger centers of localist cultural
activity. Eventually, this took the form
of three “nodes” of Pittsburgh localism
positioned throughout the project,
and tying together activity along the
incredibly long span of the project. Each
node has a different focus or raison
d’etre, and exists symbiotically with a
flexible mixed use rentable tower rising
up from it.
Node 01, where we focused the depth
of systems analysis for this building
integration studio, is a hub for intermodal
transit. This space acknowledges and
brings dignity to the fact that people
on this system of elevated walkways
and accessing the trains come from
the Greyhound station, the Pittsburgh
LRT, the East Busway, by car through
the historic Burnham driveway, by foot,
or by bicycle. This variety of transit
is highlighted through the “glass box”
nature of this node, collecting and sorting
passengers as they progress towards the
station. We see the relationship between
node 01 and the Pennsylvanian as an
offset node-tower symbiosis.
Node 02 and 03 are more speculative,
and remain to be fully detailed as part
of future explorations, but we see them
as locally significant centers that serve
the surrounding communities. Node
02 exists as a center for urban making,
such as a wood or metal shop or maker’s
space. Node 03 is an urban garden,
providing botanical relief and fresh
and local produce to the area. These
speculations design possible futures for
what it means to build a transit system
in this age.

	Upham’s Corner is a vibrant, culturally diverse community nestled within the larger neighborhood of Dorchester. The demographics of Upham’s Corner reveal a dense, largely minority population, with a high rate of homelessness and low rate of high school and college education relative to the larger Massachusetts population. As a result, design priorities for this intervention revolve around community engagement, resources for the homeless population, education programs for the community, and an emphasis on affordable and emergency public housing.

Our site is situated within the existing public infrastructure of the fire station, the cemetery, and comfort kitchen, a locally owned up-and-coming restaurant which offers global comfort food and celebrates the flavors and ingredients of the African diaspora. This particular site makes it essential to acknowledge and uplift existing public infrastructure with a new library which fits the immediate cultural and demographic context.

Small businesses in Upham’s Corner commercial sub-district.

This intervention prioritizes direct relationship to its context in terms of careful calibration to scale. The high amount of glazing on the ground floor allows the undulating second floor mass to float, and encourages community interaction by increasing permeability. An interest in sustainability informs the use of heavy timber clt construction, and the inclusion of greywater collection and distribution throughout the library. The playful roof form, clad in red-orange zinc panels designed to weather and change with the community over time, folds in the community and joins the housing and library so both have a seat at the table. This facade material also aims to be sensitive towards the red brick of the building across the street, and the rest of the neighboring context. The warm exposed wood and openness of the CLT interior creates a wide range of spaces which all benefit the surrounding community.

Long section.
This project is divided into two segments, with a continuous roof form allowing a seamless transition between affordable housing and the amenities associated with the library. The second-floor bridge connecting the two sides allows for passers-by to wander into the exterior courtyard, as well as through the cemetery. Egress stairs and elevators are located at opposite corners of the project, allowing all floors to be easily accessible throughout the building.

This intervention has three floors, and prioritizes permeability of the ground floor and openness to welcome community members into the library. A playful push and pull of the ground floor plate creates interstitial spaces and allows light to permeate the lower level, where programmatic elements such as a material-sharing space, a community room, and librarian’s offices reside. Columbia road elevation (NW).
The main level houses the most public, open programmatic spaces, and the arrangement of custom bookshelves creates smaller rooms within the larger open stacks. These spaces are flexible in program, and can house activities such as children’s story time, small community meetings, or quiet reading. The remainder of floor area on this level allows for a range of program highly visible to the public, such as art installations, activist meetings, and poetry reading to draw passers by in. The first floor envelope features large amounts of glazing, allowing for a playful permeability between the sidewalk, the cemetery, and the library interior. This envelope pulls back slightly on the southern facade to allow for a flexible outdoor seating area which serves both the library and the neighboring comfort kitchen.

The mezzanine level houses the teen’s, children’s and adult’s collection, but maintains visual continuity both with the exterior courtyard space and with the ground level to enhance the sense of community.

The arrangement of stacks and furniture allows for spaces of varying sizes for both introspection and group activities.

The most dense programmatically, the lower level houses activities that are necessarily more closed off, such as the black box theater, storage and librarian’s offices, and a maker’s space with ventilation. This floor receives light through the pulling back of the first floor plate, creating a daylit seating area and lobby for the theater.

Building systems are carefully integrated within the floor assembly through the utilization of raised flooring systems. This allows wiring and ductwork to remain concealed and allow the planes of CLT to fold and interact playfully without the distraction of visible mechanical systems. Similarly, joint details become enveloped within planes of CLT to create the appearance of floating walls and volumes.

Raised floor system.
Massing of this project is also highly related to increasing solar exposure for residents of housing and for the library with large amounts of glazing on the southern facade. The location of the exterior courtyard in a sun-rich location on the site allows it to be a pleasant space for outdoor activities year-round. The window openings wrap from wall to roof and around corners of the facade to emphasize the folding strategy of the CLT and corten upper floor. Structurally, the library relies on a system of CLT planes supported by glulaminated columns on the first floor. Glazing floats slightly recessed from the column arcade, creating liminal space for gradual entry into the architecture. The roof system is stabilized through the use of 6’ composite beams, in which wiring, sprinkler systems, and lighting reside. Raised floor systems allow the HVAC and mechanical systems to be concealed within the floor plate. The openness achieved through this complex structural system is aimed at maintaining visual continuity throughout the project to build a sense of real community for Upham’s Corner on this site.

Instructor: Cecilia Nilsson
Fall 2023

Copenhagen's Nørrebro neighborhood is the most historically diverse neighborhood, with a 30% non-western population. This neighborhood has also had a complex history, being an important site for protests including communitst initiatives during the Nazi occupation of Denmark at the end of WWII and continuing throughout the twentieth century regarding inequality, systemic disenfranchisement, and urban renewal objectives. The blocks immediately surrounding our site make up Den Sorte Firkant (The Black Square), an area that formerly offered much needed social housing, but was systematically demolished between the 1960s and 1980s as part of Copenhagen's urban renewal initiative. Residents were displaced, and the historic organization of first floor public program and upper story housing was lost. Our site was formerly one of these housing projects with ground floor retail that was demolished during this time, and in 2008 was replaced with Den Gronne Parkering (The Green Parking Garage), a greenwashed concrete parking garage that remains largely unused today. The parking garage is covered in ivy that is not native to the neighborhood, and is made of carbon-intense concrete.
<img width="1257" height="586" width_o="1257" height_o="586" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bf625577a1472da74fc7c532de9f392a3251e5c80eba30b2acfa94076e849f1f/COLLAGE.png" data-mid="198469871" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bf625577a1472da74fc7c532de9f392a3251e5c80eba30b2acfa94076e849f1f/COLLAGE.png" />

Nørrebro Timeline.&nbsp;

This project prioritizes an adaptive reuse and community focused approach to be sensitive to this complex history and bring a more sustainable attitde to the site. This investigation attempts to use as much as possible of the parking garage's original structure, with creating a system of stepped apartments connected by ramped circulation that works with the existing ramped concrete floor of the parking garage. Additional concrete would be poured to level out each floor of the apartment, minimizing the cost and material intensity by demolishing as little as possible.
<img width="980" height="356" width_o="980" height_o="356" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3f61a9047c67b55094480b2ed740a5348493922f4bef46b236ee856f60884c3b/DIAGRAM.png" data-mid="198469872" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/980/i/3f61a9047c67b55094480b2ed740a5348493922f4bef46b236ee856f60884c3b/DIAGRAM.png" />

Adaptive reuse.

The materiality of the apartment units utilizes cross-laminated timber (CLT) structural paneling, which has carbon-sinking abilities and allows for a general lightness that welcomes in residents. The ground floor is returned to its original function as a neighborhood anchor. The permeability of this level is achieved through the use of glass, which allows visual continuity with the streetscape, and through articulation at the corners, which draws in passers-by. The glass facade can also be opened on the Åboulevard side in conversation with future attempts to move traffic underground and create an urban park along the historic riverside. The flexibility of the ground floor also gives the neighborhing courtyard back to the community, providing much-needed greenspace again as public space. This floor serves the entire community of Nørrebro with programmatic elements such as a children's play and learning area, study space and conference room, public restrooms, and a large, flexible community oriented space for poetry readings, art installations, activist events, or whatever the community needs.
<img width="786" height="828" width_o="786" height_o="828" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/10162ea11f67533252a7e6f7b40fedda88ce0c7f0f1f291928c8f6ea42219548/CHUNK.png" data-mid="198514910" border="0" data-scale="65" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/786/i/10162ea11f67533252a7e6f7b40fedda88ce0c7f0f1f291928c8f6ea42219548/CHUNK.png" />

Circulation to the apartments.

Circulation to the apartments necessarily takes residents through large, flexible community spaces for seating, movie-watching, and communal cooking. Apartments are oriented in such a way that moves cooking and dining towards these public spaces, so members of the cohousing community can visually interact with this "neighborhood living room" while making and eating food. Three levels of apartments have 11 units each, totalling 33 social housing units to try to offset the destruction caused by urban renewal. Each of these floors functions as its own cohousing ecosystem, with shared amenities and programmatic elements to create a system of care and mutual respect for these groups of residents.

The whole building is folded together with a glass envelope which respects and reflects the historic shape of the social housing which used to be on our site. The envelope is permeable, and allows for ventilation with operable openings and doors on the ground floor. The top floor serves the cohousing residents, with a community garden, exercise space, and roof terrace for relaxing and taking in the neighborhood. Overall, this project investigates how to make the most of what one has in each site, and how to respect an area with a complex history with challenges and opportunities related to historic disenfranchisement.

Kitchen matrix.

Squirrel Hill as a neighborhood functions as a locus for transitory bodies from all over the world, from the grey squirrels which skitter on the ground to the birds who visit on their path up the Atlantic Flyway to immigrants from China, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, Mexico, and Thailand, to name a few. These populations navigate a historically affluent neighborhood, deemed as grade A and B (“best” and “still desirable”) in Pittsburgh’s 1937 redlining report.&nbsp; Squirrel Hill's welcoming neighborhood feel is also the result of exclusionary measures that denied black Pittsburghers entry due to redlining and imminent domain policies. “Model'' minority communities such as the asian and jewish populations of Pittsburgh originally were segregated to live exclusively in the Hill District, but eventually gained the freedom to expand into Squirrel Hill. Black Pittsburghers did not share this freedom of movement, and were trapped within the aging infrastructure of the Hill District, further closed in by highway construction and rising housing prices. The effects of this segregation can still be seen today. The story of Squirrel Hill is inextricably linked to subjugation of black communities, and the proliferation of the lasting effects of slavery in the United States. For the Urban Traces Seminar, I have explored how immaterial rituals like food practice can create a sense of belonging, space-take and become an active tool of placemaking. Throughout the semester, I mapped the neighborhood at multiple scales as well as interviewed three stewards of the neighborhood to give us a small glimpse of Squirrel Hill in one semester’s work.

A Brief Timeline of Squirrel Hill.&nbsp;

For residents of Squirrel Hill, rituals around food -- including going to the grocery store, selecting ingredients, prepping, cooking, and eating -- create and recreate powerful memories, from reminders of childhood to the unquantifiable feeling of being home.&nbsp; Food practices occur in everyday ephemeral bodily experiences, heightening senses of smell, taste, and sound that are immeasurable, but part of the rhythms of people’s daily lives. According to Arjit Sen in his essay Eating Ethnicity: Spatial Ethnography of Hyderabad House Restaurant on Devon Avenue, Chicago these sensory experiences become a memory-charged sign encoded with recreated, and familiar space, and can transport the mind across time and space. A good meal also has the power to connect people of a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, and can help bridge gaps in cultural differences.

Murray Avenue.

This reading of food as a spatial actor leans heavily on Jie Li’s book on Shanghai Homes, as preparing food fundamentally recreates place inside of new domains. Within each recipe is inscribed generations of historical knowledge and practice which are revived and augmented with each iteration. The act of cooking is inherently a corporeal practice, specifically an incorporating ceremony of the body, as described in Paul Connerton’s book How Societies Remember published in 1989 work. Preparing a dish becomes automatic and corporeal as the steps and rituals involved are (re)produced and (re)inscribed each time they are made. The dishes are also altered from generation to generation, and from place to place. Depending on the availability of ingredients and the knowledge and preferences of the chef, dishes change and are never the same twice. Dishes passed down for generations contain the traces of the past written into their flavor profiles.&nbsp; In addition, the act of cooking can become a radical act of space-taking, placemaking for those that are not otherwise offered a place of their own, and food creates opportunities to embed one-self to the in-betweenness of society, existings liminally, to borrow terminology from Ana Luz in her essay Places In-Between: The Transit(tional) Locations of Nomadic Narratives.

<img width="1500" height="1000" width_o="1500" height_o="1000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/85de02a8af1eed72670b51b1624d6aa0d7463c1ac7a91bb60e314e1f1cf9c822/TRANSITORY-BODIES.png" data-mid="199025576" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/85de02a8af1eed72670b51b1624d6aa0d7463c1ac7a91bb60e314e1f1cf9c822/TRANSITORY-BODIES.png" />

Transitory Bodies.

For Squirrel Hill in particular, cuisine is a driving force for community interaction, and becomes a way to foster civic belonging in the togetherness and a general feeling of belonging for everyone in the neighborhood. As one of Pittsburgh's most diverse neighborhoods, Squirrel Hill nurtures a growing population of Jewish and East Asian population in the city drawing students from the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon, Chatham, and many more adjacent institutions to Squirrel Hill, who travel here to get the taste of “home” they so crave. This home is not a physical location, but rather a collection of feelings that references belonging, safety, and comfort--a space rather than a place. The food landscape in the neighborhood makes them feel less alone. This atmosphere is palpable in Squirrel Hill, from restaurant interiors to the amalgamation of smells that waft from their kitchens--mixing spices and flavor profiles from all around the globe. The jewish population in this neighborhood uses food spaces, particularly Murray Avenue Grill as a safe gathering place for the entire community. The close nature and walkability of Squirrel Hill becomes especially important for Jewish communities, who rely on amenities--such as kosher groceries and delis, worship spaces, and community gathering halls--within walking distance due to restrictions on driving during Shabbat.&nbsp; The growing asian community of students and young families can find international ingredients locally at Panda Mart, or can pick up familiar homestyle cooking at any of the numerous restaurants. The food of Squirrel Hill creates strong ties from this neighborhood to places all over the world. Walking down Murray Avenue, anyone can grab any number of different cuisines, from west african to thai to traditional jewish cuisine.

Food practices are not just nostalgic forces which incorporate the past however; as food creates an embodied form of placemaking, weaving interactions within Squirrel Hill that might not otherwise be common. In this way, Squirrel Hill becomes a locus for transitory bodies which fosters relationships across community lines, and contributes to the neighborhood's safe and welcoming atmosphere, where orthodox jewish families coexist with latino, asian, and (some) black communities, grappling with their differences as they live side by side. Squirrel Hill, due to high jewish populations, is also the site of severe acts of anti-semetic violence, most notably the murder of rabinical student Neal Rosenblum in 1986, and the Tree of Life massacre shooting in 2018. As a result of this, the ability to carve space through the reproduction of traditional and culturally significant food practices becomes essential to the resiliency of the neighborhood and the jewish community as a whole. Food practice becomes a counter-hegemonic act of worldmaking which allows communities to hack the neighborhood and carve a space that is uniquely their own.
